Charlie’s Blog- Peter Wells May 2015

With so much going on at the brewery we thought it was high time we started our very own Charlie’s Blog to bring all our beer and pub news and general musings to the world in one place! Peter Wells, Managing Director of Charles Wells UK Pubs had the pleasure of writing our first instalment:

Peter and Bob MortimerHuzzah to St George
We saw in St George’s Day in true Bombardier style on April 23rd.  With the bunting hung, the flag flying and bottles of Bombardier for all; we also welcomed Bob Mortimer to the brewery.  He’s the new face of our Bombardier character and came in to meet the teams behind the beer and join us for the first showing of the new ad which also stars our golden ale Bombardier Burning Gold.  Bob brings his own unique blend of comedy to the character which is hard not to love so if you haven’t seen the advert yet keep an eye out for it on TV over the next few weeks or head to the Bombardier Facebook page and while you’re there why not sign up to the regiment and keep up-to-date with the latest news?

As I’ve been out and about at our pubs this month it’s also been great to see (and enjoy a couple of pints of!) our newest beer Charlie Wells’ Dry Hopped Lager which has been getting the thumbs up from drinkers.  We’ve brought some fantastically creative new beers out over the past year, but this one I am particularly excited about.  Not only because it’s a genuinely great pint, but it celebrates the brewery’s heritage we’re so proud of with a contemporary spin and it’s great to hear publicans and drinkers love it as much as we do!

Day 2 Others16Bank holiday fun
It seems we’ve been spoilt with Bank Holidays recently and I’ve got my fingers crossed for nice weather on the next one as many of our licensees have events lined up at the pubs.  A massive 80% of the people that attend the family fun days, beer festivals and music events they put on will be new to the pub so these are such a great opportunity.  One licensee in particular, never one to do things by half, has combined all three into one legendary annual event called TilFest.  Richard Binks who runs The White Horse in Tilbrook lays on the three day spectacular every year which pulls in crowds in their thousands and if you’re close to Cambridgeshire it’s well worth a visit.

Many of the events our hard working licensees have planned are in aid of Macmillan as part of the May Madness fundraising drive.  We had the fantastic news this month that, together with their customers they’ve raised more than £85k for the charity which means we’re well on our way to reaching our target of £100k.

I, myself will also be doing my part as part of our Charles Wells Charity Cycle team.  Together, on the 11th June, twenty of us will be cycling 336 miles from the d’Parys pub in Bedford to our Bombardier pub in Paris and for many of the team, including me it’s the first time on a bike in a long, long time but that hasn’t deterred us.  I’ve bought the first bike I’ve owned in 25 years for the challenge and we’ve all been training hard in preparation.  We want to raise more than £20,000 for Macmillan and Sue Ryder’s St John’s Hospice so every little counts and you can support our team on our Virgin Just Giving Page, or simply by cheering us on on Facebook as we set off!
