CHARLES WELLS PUB COMPANY APPOINTS OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

The Board of Charles Wells Pub Company has been strengthened by the appointment of Craig Mayes to the new position of Operations Director.

Mayes (30) took up his appointment on 1st January 2011 with specific responsibility for the ongoing development of the company’s relationship with, and support of, its licensee customers as they work towards building profitable and sustainable businesses.

Announcing the appointment Anthony Wallis, Managing Director of Charles Wells Pub Company said “Without our fantastic licensees we wouldn’t have a business, so developing a close working relationship and appropriate support package with them through our operations team is critical. The appointment of an Operations Director to the Board reflects the importance we place on this partnership and Craig has already demonstrated great leadership and the ability to implement change that is needed to develop our customer relations further.”

Craig Mayes joined the company as Retail Development Manager in August 2007 and headed up the operations of John Bull Pub Company France before taking up his previous role of Director of Operations. He manages a team of four experienced Retail Development Managers, a new post of Retail Development Executive and will oversee the company’s Capital Investment Programme through its property development team.

“Charles Wells Pub Company is already well known for its licensee support” commented Mayes “but we must constantly review our business to make sure we’re adapting to market conditions. I believe we have some of the best pubs in the areas we operate in and are in a great position to thrive during the uncertainty of the current economy. My immediate priorities are to improve the overall sustainability of our pubs, listen to customer feedback, act on that feedback, continue to develop our relationships with licensees and to encourage them to engage in their local communities.”

Mayes was born with the pub industry in his blood – his grandfather was a publican, running a number of pubs around Luton whilst his father has run a number of large pub companies. Craig first started working in pub kitchens at the age of 12, working his way up to head waiter whilst at school before moving to the Netherlands to study European Hospitality Management during which he spent time working in kitchens, restaurants and hotels across France and The Netherlands. After graduation he joined the Marriott Hotels graduate programme and gained further experience of the licensed trade working as Operations & Sales Manager for Scottish & Newcastle.

“I believe that 2011 will be about providing value for money and delivering a great pub experience for consumers” continued Mayes. “I’ll be working with the Charles Wells team to develop new and innovative ways to help licensees attract consumers into their pubs, despite the backdrop of austerity measures and pressure on leisure time and spend.”

Charles Wells Pub Company is finalising a package of support to help those licensees whose business was adversely affected by December’s poor weather, is holding price increases on home brewed draught beers and running a number of promotions to drive sales in its pubs.
