CHARLES WELLS LTD GIVES PUBS THE KEY TO ITS COMMUNITY CHEST

Charles Wells Ltd has recognised the importance of its pubs in the local community and given them the key to a £20,000 charitable community chest.

The company has made donations totalling over £40,000 in three years through its Eagle Aid scheme and details of this years format have just been confirmed.

“We want to encourage pubs to unlock potential in their local community” explained Vice-Chairman Tom Wells. “They and their customers are a wonderful medium through which to channel our charitable giving scheme and we have made funding available for projects identified by our retailers and their customers that will have a positive impact on the lives of those around them. By working together and supporting a local cause, we expect the participating pubs to be seen as central to village or community life and become ever more important in the eyes of their customers.”

All pubs within the Charles Wells Pub Company estate were invited to apply for donations with just two stipulations: that the charitable project they chose was of benefit to the local community or individuals therein and that the pub undertook to raise a minimum of £250 additional funds for the charity.

“Effectively we are helping customers of our pubs to help the less fortunate in their own communities” continued Tom Wells. “Eagle Aid 2007 will provide assistance but it will also act as the catalyst for further fundraising and thirty eight pubs have accepted our challenge. In doing so, they have reserved a guaranteed share of £525 from the community chest. Although many organise their own events we have provided them with a fundraising pack to help stimulate ideas for raising additional income, and are hopeful that the regulars at each pub will help double our original gift to their charity through their own fundraising efforts.”

Two pubs started fundraising efforts before they knew what their share of the community chest would be and others are expected to hold events throughout the summer. All donations are likely to be made to the charities concerned by the end of September, with most pubs indicating that they will hold a special presentation evening, raising additional funds to the very last moment of the scheme.
