CHARLES WELLS PUB COMPANY PROVIDES FURTHER PRICE SUPPORT FOR LICENSEES

Charles Wells Pub Company has confirmed that it is to extend its price freeze on draught beers brewed by Wells and Young’s Brewing Co Ltd until 1st July 2009.

The Bedford based company had previously advised its licensees that prices would be held until 4th April 2009 and the latest announcement has been made in response to the ongoing unpredictability of the market. A proportion of suppliers’ price rises for a number of other key volume lines has also been absorbed by Charles Wells Pub Company, enabling them to hold increases on these brands to 2%.

“We remain close to our licensees and are working with them to provide the practical support they need whilst confidence in the economy is low” explained Peter Wells, Sales & Marketing Director of Charles Wells Pub Company. “By building a close working relationship, it enables us to help our retailers maintain and grow their share of consumer spending which is particularly important in the current climate.”

The company has identified a number of significant occasions when licensees can maximise their sales of the speciality beer range supplied by Wells and Young’s. “Wells Bombardier is synonymous with St George’s Day celebrations and a new £2m advertising campaign has just been launched for Courage” said Peter Wells. “Cask Ale Week is going to be an important calendar event for our pubs and by extending the prize freeze on all Wells and Young’s draught beers, we expect to assist our retailers in driving sales and profits on these key brands.”

Following Chancellor Alistair Darling’s announcement that the budget will be held on 22nd April 2009 the company is continuing to press for a reduction in beer duty and is supporting the Axe the Beer Tax – Save the Pub campaign. “We’ve urged our licensees and head office staff to show their support for the campaign” said Wells “as this is a great example of how we can work together to get a fairer deal for the licensed trade. Ultimately, we want to make a real impact in developing pubs into profitable and sustainable businesses for our retailers and deliver a great pub experience for the consumer.”
