PUB REGULARS ROLL OUT THE BARREL

Regulars at The Half Moon pub in Kempston, on the outskirts of Bedford, are recovering after completing a gruelling sponsored walk of over 40miles in the Peak District. In itself, the walk would be tiring, but they decided to make it more interesting by carrying an 18 gallon beer barrel along with them.

The walk was the brainchild of a couple of customers, with the support of licensees Roger & Nickie McGlory, and was part of the ongoing fundraising activities organised by them and their customers. “After the initial idea of a sponsored walk, the idea just got bigger and bigger” explained Nickie. “We have a fantastic group of customers who will do almost anything to support their local community and, yet again, they threw themselves behind this latest challenge.”

In total, 36 people took part in the three day walk, camping out overnight. They finished at The George in Castleton – another leased pub owned by Charles Wells Pub Company. “It was a great relief to finally put down the beer barrel that had been our constant companion over so many miles of difficult terrain!”

The group are still collecting the sponsorship money, but expect to have raised in excess of £5000 for the Ridgeway School for youngsters with special needs in Kempston bringing their total fundraising this year to an incredible £11,000+ which has been split between other local charities. An additional £525 will be added to the walk total from the Eagle Aid charitable giving scheme administered by Charles Wells Ltd. “This is a fantastic example of how a pub sits at the heart of its community” commented Tom Wells who runs the scheme on behalf of the Bedford Company. “The way the regulars of The Half Moon get together so often to help others in their neighbourhood is fantastic and we can only applaud them for completing their latest adventure in the Peak District to benefit those less fortunate than themselves.”

Customers of The Half Moon, Kempston are already planning their next fundraising event, their annual cycle treasure hunt that will be held on Sunday 26th August.
