PETER WELLS GOES BACK TO THE FLOOR
Peter Wells, Sales and Marketing Director of Charles Wells Pub Company, went ‘Back to the Floor’ last week when he worked a busy evening shift in one of the company’s pubs.He worked at The Cross Keys in Great Woolstone, Milton Keynes with licensee Paul Hepworth as part of the Spring into Summer challenge that the company ran during March and April. Each week, the licensee recording the highest percentage increase in sales over the same period last year was able to select a prize to benefit their business and Paul took advantage of the offer for Peter Wells to work alongside his bar team.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience” commented Peter Wells at the end of his shift “and had fun meeting all the characters in the pub and chatting to them about what makes the great pub experience that keeps them coming back to The Cross Keys.”
“It was a pleasure to work with Paul, who shares our own passion for cask beer, and his team whose energy and enthusiasm I really admired. It reminded me just how hard everyone works in the pub trade and I’m proud of everyone who does it on a daily basis” he concluded.
Paul Hepworth, Peter’s boss for the evening said “It was good to see Peter on the front line tackling some of the jobs that go into running a pub. I’m glad that he enjoyed it and am sure that when he’s next looking at a set of figures this experience will help him understand the reality of how those figures come about – and he’ll always be welcome to come back for more banter with the regulars!”
The Spring into Summer challenge was taken up by 50 Charles Wells' licensees and average sales increased by 20% in their pubs over the same period last year. Eight weekly winners chose from a range of business building prizes whilst the two licensees recording consistent sales figures to claim monthly prizes for March and April won £1000. Paul Hepworth didn’t hesitate to snap up the opportunity to ‘win a Wells’ for the evening, whilst other licensees have chosen from prizes including garden centre vouchers, chalk artist for a day or a pub website.
“I put my name forward for Spring into Summer as I believed in the challenge” said Peter Wells “and the results show that licensees got behind it, drew on their creativity and worked even harder than normal to really drive sales. It shows the importance of putting on events to encourage people to visit their local pubs and The Cross Keys was a great example of serving the community on the night I worked there – with food being served, groups playing pool, a disco in one bar and a number of different social groups meeting in another.”
Peter will be using the experience to help plan further promotional activity and licensee support across the Charles Wells estate.
