New Retailer Induction Programme Shortlisted in Business Awards

CRISP, the Charles Wells Retail Induction Support Programme, has been shortlisted for recognition in the Business Training category at the Luton and Bedfordshire Business Excellence Awards. The accolade comes soon after being named as a finalist in the BII Nita Awards and only four months after going live.

CRISP was developed at the beginning of the year by a project group that included Charles Wells support staff with expertise in training, marketing, business development, finance as well as pub operations. Some of the company’s existing licensees also contributed to the project and continue to offer their support as mentors.

“Within our marketing strategy to deliver the vision of becoming first choice for customers and consumers, we recognised that it’s essential to attract the best, and right, people to run our pubs. Our commitment is to ensure they have the tools and training to build trade and develop long-term sustainable businesses” explained Sales and Marketing Director, Peter Wells. “We want to provide the best possible support to our retailers – and that starts from the word go with the CRISP programme.”

The five day programme is compulsory for all retailers wishing to take a Charles Wells pub tenancy or lease. It provides a comprehensive introduction to running a pub and offers practical help, advice and qualifications. It’s tailored specifically to Charles Wells Pub Company so that prospective licensees get to know the company and its operating style from the start and recognition in the award finals reflects the impact the programme is already having.

“For anyone who’s never run a pub before” continued Peter Wells, “CRISP also offers an opportunity to spend time with one of our existing retailers. These mentors are a crucial element of the scheme, showing what’s involved in the bar, kitchen and back office and raising operational questions for newcomers to think about. They’ll offer further advice from their own experience and give a realistic insight into running a pub before any commitment is made.”

Charles Wells Pub Company is also sponsoring the Best Retail/Leisure Business category at the Business Excellence Awards which are to be announced at a celebratory awards dinner in November. “We are using our sponsorship to show that we encourage exceptional standards in retail businesses” explained Peter Wells “and identify the areas of best practice that could be incorporated into our pubs.”

Ironically, two of the shortlisted finalists in the category are The Park and The White Horse – Bedford pubs within the Charles Wells Pub Company estate. “Our focus on retail support and excellent customer service are obviously translating into exceptional standards in our pubs” added Wells. “We’re proud to know that our pubs are leading the way in the retail leisure sector and will be wishing them well at the Awards ceremony.”

The Bedfordshire and Luton 2007 Business Excellence Awards recognise the achievements of leading edge employers and individuals. Organised by Premier Newspapers in association with the Learning Skills Council, they are the premier showcase for the county's rising stars.
