Charles Wells Pub Company launches Speciality Beer House

Charles Wells Pub Company has launched the first two pubs in a new development concept known as the ‘Speciality Beer House’.

The Bedford Arms, Bedford and The Golden Pheasant, Biggleswade have been refurbished and are now open for business under the Speciality Beer House identity. The pubs provide a celebration of beer, with an unrivalled choice of beer styles for consumers. They demonstrate excellence in all areas of cellar management and alcohol retailing and offer the chance for beer lovers and novices, male and female, to explore the different ranges of beer available.

“We have identified speciality beers as a great development area” commented Peter Wells, Sales and Marketing Director of Charles Wells Pub Company “and we’re excited by the reception our two Speciality Beer Houses have already received. It’s not just about making the beers available, though, and it’s important to get the offer and service right if we are to promote the category. We’ve established certain criterion that must be followed in a Speciality Beer House to ensure we deliver what consumers want and, in turn, help our retailers run a successful business operation.”

The guidelines for the Speciality Beer House concept include achieving cask marque accreditation and working closely with CAMRA. They should also provide a good range of bottled beers from Britain and overseas, offering a range of fruit and wheat beers, ciders and perry’s with the licensee and bar staff all demonstrating a good knowledge of, and passion for, beer. Not only will the Speciality Beer Houses present the range of fabulous beers brewed in Bedford by Wells & Young’s Brewing Co Ltd but they will also incorporate a diverse selection of other beers from other independent and micro breweries to compliment the range. A further benefit for consumers who are unsure of where to start their journey of beer appreciation is the opportunity to try a sample before they buy.

Pubs bearing the Speciality Beer House signage will also develop a bespoke menu to mirror the strong focus on beer and will also introduce beer and food matching, subject to availability of the appropriate kitchen facilities. Food and beer menus will be posted on chalkboards whilst the interior of the pub will be decorated in a traditional, comfortable, easy style with simplicity that makes everyone feel instantly at home.

“The first two Speciality Beer Houses in our estate are already providing a great atmosphere and choice of beers for consumers and helping to draw new trade into pubs at a time when the industry, as a whole, is facing its smoke-free future” commented Peter Wells. “It’s particularly rewarding to see men and women visiting the pubs and knowing they’ll receive a warm welcome. We’re already looking for additional sites that would be suitable to operate as Speciality Beer Houses and hope to extend the concept further in the forthcoming months.”

Charles Wells Pub Company is actively seeking to acquire new pubs across the range of styles in its estate including the Speciality Beer House, quality food houses, traditional community pubs and pubs with letting accommodation. It is also seeking individuals with an outstanding approach to customer service and exceptional retailing skills to discuss tenancy and lease opportunities.
