TWO’S COMPANY

Two family brewers are working together to improve the standards in pubs and bars by running a joint BII Profitable Business Portfolio Diploma course.

Charles Wells Pub Company and McMullen have initiated the learning programme, in what they believe to be an unprecedented move, that sees retail operators and head office staff studying together to earn the BII accredited qualification.

Chris Nicholls, Head of Training and Recruitment at Charles Wells Pub Company explained “The aim of the course is to develop individuals in all disciplines of running a licensed retail operation and by sharing the classroom with McMullen personnel, our candidates are able to experience a wider cross section of ideas. It’s noticeable how the students are learning more through sharing best practice and discussing different operational styles than if the course was geared towards just one company.”

Delegates on the course, run by Phil Jackson, include a number of Managers from McMullen’s Baroosh bars, tenants from the Charles Wells estate and a number of Head office personnel. The original idea for the joint course was discussed by Dermot O’Halloran (Charles Wells) and Helen Darracott (McMullen) at a meeting of training managers from family brewers and after completion of three of the seven modules, is proving to be a valuable pilot scheme.

“Both McMullen and Charles Wells pride themselves on the attention to detail, quality and customer service that consumers receive in outlet” continued Chris Nicholls. “The BII Profitable Business Portfolio Diploma is designed to improve business skills and give practical knowledge which helps profitability, productivity and career development and the exchange of views and experience can only help the candidates’ performance as they share this rare joint venture.”

The Diploma course is being run alternately at The Eagle Centre, Bedford and McMullen, Hertford and candidates are scheduled to complete all seven modules by July 2007.

Notes To Editors:

Charles Wells Pub Company is a division of Charles Wells Ltd and owns 260 tenanted and leased pubs. Based in Bedford, the estate primarily stretches across the Midlands, East Anglia and the Northern Home Counties although a recent acquisition of ten pubs demonstrated the company’s commitment to expand beyond its traditional heartland. The ongoing development of the company is part of a seven point strategy to support licensees in creating successful retail businesses. The strategy is based on consultation with current and potential Charles Wells Pub Company licensees and includes investment in property, marketing and training. Through this feedback, the company is constantly improving and evolving so that its licensees are positioned to react and capitalise on the challenges facing the licensed trade. Placing this strategy at the core of its activity is a crucial step forward in the delivery of its mission to become First choice for customers and consumers.

McMullen has over 50 pubs situated predominantly throughout the Northern Home Counties with styles ranging from Pub & bar restaurants to community pub. The McMullen philosophy is a simple one of constantly striving to exceed customers’ expectations. Excellent customer service and good value for money feature at the heart of operations as all customers who walk through the doors are served in a friendly, caring and professional manner. Each outlet is carefully positioned and operations have a good choice of the best liquor brands along with a selection of McMullen award winning cask conditioned ales. Customers’ expectations can only be exceeded if the best teams are in place in each of the outlets and training and opportunity to develop to full potential is at the heart of staff development.
