New Beers land at Brewpoint Bedford

A new range of compelling standout Beers with a true love story attached has landed at Brewpoint Taproom and Shop.

Inspired by Charles Wells's true love, Josephine, whom he married in 1872, the new beers pay tribute to the woman who was Charles' anchor and the reason why Wells & Co. has over 187 years of history.

On the launch of the Brands, Head of Sales and Brand Marketing at Wells & Co. Jonny Kirkham said: “We are absolutely buzzing to launch these new beers today and honour Josephine Wells, the wife of our founder Charlie, with our new brand identity. The importance of family, people and storytelling is central to the Brewpoint ethos and this stretches back to 1876 when were first founded in Bedford. It’s been a huge team effort to bring these beers to life and we hope beer fans from Bedford and beyond enjoy sinking a few.”

The Love Story

In the early 1870s, while Charles was on leave from the Navy, he met and fell in love with Josephine Grimbly.  Charles wanted to marry Josephine but her father did not think it wise for Charles to leave his daughter alone while he was at sea for months at a time. He told Charles that he would not give his consent until he had left the navy, and found another job. So Charles left the Navy and became a brewer. On the 24th September 1872, Charles and Josephine were married at Banbury Church, Oxfordshire.

In 1876, Charles Wells bought the Horne Lane Brewery, situated on the banks of the River Ouse in Bedford, and 36 pubs at auction to establish the Charles Wells Family Brewery to provide beer for the local population of Bedfordshire.
