Charles Wells, who have been Charity Partners with Macmillan Cancer Support for the past three years, are celebrating having raised £150,000 smashing their original target of £50,000. The money raised will now fund a Macmillan nurse for three years.
Charles Wells head office staff joined over 200pubs across the UK in a drive to organise a variety of fundraising events to support the partnership. The flagship event was ‘May Madness’ when pubs put on all kinds of wacky events over the May bank holiday. From family fun days to barbeques and bouncy castles whole communities got involved to raise money. The partnership was launched in 2013 with the initial aim of raising £50,000 to fund a Macmillan nurse for a year. But the staff, pubs and customers were so supportive that it was agreed to increase the target to fund a Macmillan nurse for three years. During the partnership there have been coffee mornings, head shaves, sweepstakes, and the Charles Wells annual golf day. The golf day was a huge success raising over £8,000 every year with both suppliers and pubs getting involved.
The partnership has had a huge impact on Macmillan providing opportunities for the charity to not only raise vital funds, but to provide information of their services direct to Charles Wells’ staff and customers too. Macmillan’s aim is to reach and improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer, and this money will take them one step closer to making sure no one faces cancer alone. Deepa Doshi part of the local Macmillan services team says: “Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) are highly skilled and provide a huge range of support to cancer patients and their loved ones. CNS’s provide clinical support, help manage symptoms, assess and get support for practical and financial support, provide emotional support and empower patients to self-manage in a way that works for the individual. Overall, they improve the quality of life for the patient and their loved ones during and after their cancer treatment. CNS are key in joining up services across what can often be a complex system to navigate especially when unwell. They are a key part of the cancer workforce, working in hospitals, community teams and hospices”.

Such an incredible amount has been raised and we have loved hearing all the stories from the pubs who got involved. Some of the fundraising ideas have been truly original and we have had so much fun along the way”

Each year we have a collective vote amongst our colleagues to decide which charity we should support for that year. Once that decision is made our mission is simple, raise as much money as we can in 12 months. People have really got behind this mission raising money throughout the year at the brewery and at Charles Wells pubs across the country, this truly has been a fantastic team effort.”
