Young's Special London Ale (6.4% ABV)

An award-winning bottled ale of renown, Young’s Special London Ale was CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain, achieving Gold Medal Winner status in 1999 and winning Silver Medals in 2004 and 2005. In 2008, Special London Ale received the Grand Gold Monde Selection and CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain Bronze Awards.Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
Jeff Evans, in the Bottled Beer Guide 2006 wrote that Young’s Special London ale is:
“Bronze, with a rich, malty, orangey hop aroma. Smooth, rich and malty on the palate, it has a fine, tangy hop flavour with orange marmalade notes. Dry, long-lasting finish of smoky, orangey Golding hops.”
It is a 100% malt brew combining Maris Otter and Crystal malt with Fuggle and Golding hops. Golding and Target hops are added after fermentation, which creates an exciting fresh and hoppy bouquet. Fresh yeast and wort are added at bottling to continue the maturation as a ‘live’, bottle-conditioned ale.
